UCAN Mission and United Way Team Up
During Spring It On 24 Hour Online Fundraiser
United Way of Southern Chautauqua County will be partnering with the United Christian Advocacy Network (UCAN) City Mission during the upcoming Spring It On event. Spring It On is designed to raise awareness and funds for not-for-profit organizations throughout Western New York with a unique 24-hour focus. At a time when many people are searching for ways to support specific causes and organizations, Spring It On provides a one-stop opportunity to donate to one or many organizations. Last year, Spring It On raised over $160,000 for organizations located throughout Western New York. United Way has participated the last three years with a different focus each year.
The UCAN City Mission located on 7 West First Street in Jamestown is home to many who have struggled with addiction and in some instances the mission is the reason why many have been given a second chance at life. Providing in partnership with area churches and the local community, the UCAN City Mission is a Transitional Community Resource Center and temporary/emergency housing unit in Chautauqua County; promoting life-style changes with a Biblically centered ministry through mentoring, counseling, pro-social role modeling and the discipline of accountability.
A past resident and now an employee of the UCAN City Mission spoke about his experience from being a heroin addict to now being sober and helping others. His identity is to remain anonymous.
“Ten years ago, I was first introduced to the UCAN Mission to get sober. I experienced thirteen overdoses, several comas, two strokes, a heart attack, heart surgery, and seven blood clots in my lungs. It’s a miracle I am still alive. I give credit to God and the UCAN City Mission for helping me. Being at the Mission and helping others today reminds me of where I came from."
Places like the UCAN City Mission need to exist so more stories about the journey toward recovery can be told. By participating in Spring It On you are giving someone a second chance at life.
Spring It On will begin on March 20 starting at 6:00 p.m. and end on March 21 at 6:00 p.m. United Way of Southern Chautauqua County will be concluding the final two hours of the event at Brazil Craft Beer and Wine Lounge located at 10 East 4th Street in Jamestown on March 21 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Community members are encouraged to stop in to support and learn more about the UCAN City Mission.
